New scanner misses the mark

"It's not good enough for prime time," Transportation Security Administration (TSA) chief Kip Hawley said of the ShoeScanner, which scans footwear while worn, according to USA Today.

Consequently, fliers will have to continue taking off their shoes because the scanning machine needs improvement. Tests have revealed "security deficiencies" that prevent the machine from consistently finding weapons and bomb parts, Mr Hawley said.

Tests will continue on the scanner; previously the TSA said ShoeScanner offered "very promising technology to let passengers keep their shoes on."

It was hoped the scanner would help ease congestion at security lines clogged with people taking off their shoes.

No new timetable was set for using the scanner.
