American Airlines is testing a new boarding system that offers priority boarding to passengers who do not have any carry-ons. Such Economy passengers are offered boarding after the elite passengers and before other coach class passengers.
AA is currently conducting the ‘limited tests,’ which began few weeks ago, at four airports – Austin-Bergstrom International, Washington Dulles International, Baltimore Washington International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International.
While we agree it would be great to be able to walk down the aisle to our seat without having to wait in line while other passengers struggle to cram their over-sized carry-ons into the tiny compartments, we remember that American was the first US airline to introduce, in 2008, a fee for the first checked bag.
Could this new “test” in actuality be a test to gauge demand for “premium” boarding, with a new fee? We’ll have to wait and see….
