Aircraft maker Airbus and Russia-based RT-Biotekhprom (Rostec Group) recently signed an agreement at the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2013 (airshow) to study the feasibility of sustainable aviation fuel development using Russian feedstock.
The two parties agreed to launch a large-scale study of Russian feedstock as well as the steps needed for the commercialization of sustainable fuels (bio-fuels) for aviation according to a press release.
The study will select, based on economic, social sustainability and ecological criteria, a number of local sources for sustainable raw materials for the production of aviation fuel and prepare a comprehensive report, including an analysis of the impediments to production, by the end of 2014.
It is believed that having the ability to produce sustainable aviation fuel for use by the Russian aviation industry will have a positive effect on climate change by helping to reduce C02 emissions.
Airbus will help ensure that the produced fuel meets international aviation standards and also will help conduct relevant flight tests.
