Aircraft maker Airbus unveiled a self-tracking smart bag at the Airbus Innovation Days 2013 event at its Toulouse headquarters last week.
The smart luggage, dubbed Bag2Go, has been developed in partnership with T-Systems and luggage maker Rimowa. The bags incorporate an RFID chip that interacts with automated airport and airline baggage-handling systems, which can match smart bag-tags with the passenger’s flight details.
Each piece of Bag2Go luggage uses location-detection systems using GPS and a 2G-cellular network technology. This enables the user to accurately track the bag using a dedicated iPhone app. The bag can even sense its weight and display it through the iPhone.
Airbus expects the bags, which are still in the development stage, to cost just 20 percent more than normal bags.
