US Airways is beginning daily seasonal service between its hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Madrid, Spain, and Dublin, Ireland. The new flights will operate through Sept. 30 and will complement US Airways’ daily nonstop service to both cities from Philadelphia, the airline’s international gateway. Madrid service began last Friday and will be operated with Boeing B767-200ER aircraft with seating for 18 in Envoy, US Airways’ international business class, and 186 in the main cabin. Dublin service began over the weekend, and is operated with Boeing B757-200 ETOPS aircraft with seating for 12 in Envoy and 164 in the main cabin.

Delta Air  Lines, Alitalia and Air France KLM have formed an alliance to operate as a single airline on trans-Atlantic flights, to and from Europe and the United States and Canada.  Through this alliance, the airlines intend to respond to fluctuating demand and increasing jet fuel prices as a single airline.

For travelers, this means  a 7 to 9 percent reduction in seats (passenger capacity) beginning this fall.  No longer will you be able to find special sales and deals on cheap flights to Europe when the airlines are desperate to fill their planes at almost any price.   These four airlines will now be able to monitor their total flights to ensure every plane is flying as full as possible.

The new alliance will adjust their combined capacity by reducing the number of flights on select routes, eliminating some routes during off-peak seasons and ultimately, adjusting the supply of seats to the demand, which will keep pricing high.

American Airline’s flights to Dublin use a two-class Boeing 767S aircraft with 225 seats.  In its new facility at Terminal 2 in Dublin, American has installed self-service machines to facilitate boarding.  Using the machines, passengers can chose their seats and print their boarding passes without waiting in long lines for regular check-in.

Strong demand since the first of this year gave credence to those who maintained that airlines would raise prices to recoup some of their past year’s losses.  But that was before the continuing disruption caused by the volcanic ash crisis, organized labor actions and economic crises that have plagued flights to Europe and wrecked havoc with planning for  summer vacations.

London’s Centre for Economics and Business Research stated recently that airlines are likely to increase the cost of European airfare by more than $50 per round-trip ticket to offset their losses from the volcanic ash.

At the peak of the volcanic ash disruption, almost one-third of all flights globally were affected. Reuters reported on April 28 that the cost of canceled and delayed flights and booking changes to European airlines is estimated between $2 and $3.3 billion dollars.

Added to these costs, the price of oil has risen more than 75% for the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last  year.  The pressure is on the airlines to recoup their losses if demand for European airfare remains high over the peak summer travel season.

The question that hasn’t been addressed is whether demand will stay high.  Cruise lines and tour operators are reporting record bookings for European travel and cruises this summer.  Demand for airfare will be high – unless travelers became wary of the myriad issues and chose the safety of an alternate destination over the risk of being delayed due to ash, strikes or political unrest.

Thick volcanic ash that disrupted flights globally is a leading cause of the projected increase in European airfare this summer.

Our suggestion is to allow an extra day or two in Europe before joining a cruise or escorted tour.  The cost of a few nights’ hotel accommodation is minimal compared to the peace of mind of arriving on time at your destination.   Be sure to read travel insurance plans carefully before purchasing to ensure delays due to volcanic ash, insolvency and strikes are covered.

Don’t wait for a “last minute deal” if you find airline tickets to Europe that fit your budget.  Purchase it now before prices increase closer to the summer season and reasonably priced European airfare becomes virtually impossible to find.

A recent analysis in the UK revealed that Ryanair’s additional fees have skyrocketed by over 700% since 2006.  The analysis was prompted by Ryanair’s announcement of a 33% hike in the fee – to £20 per bag each way – for checked luggage during July and August.  Add this fee to Ryan’s £10 check-in fee and £5 per person per flight fee for using a credit or debit card to pay for your tickets.  These fees are in addition to fees for infants under age 2, luggage that weighs over 15 kg (about 33 lbs) or is over-sized, priority boarding, and on and on….

Did I neglect to mention that the above discounted fees are applied only if you purchase your cheap flights to Europe, check-in and pay for your checked luggage online?

If you wait to check-in at the airport, the charge jumps to £20 and the checked luggage fee becomes £40 per bag each way.

Best not to purchase food or beverages aboard the Ryanair flight – their pricing for in-flight food and drink is higher than any other Irish or British airline with an average mark-up of  520% over grocery store prices.

Plus if you indulge in too much liquid and need to use the restroom aboard  cheap European Ryanair flights, you may be subject to a £1 fee if Ryan proceeds with its plans to add a coin-operated device on its restrooms.

On a related note, The Associated Press reported that Boeing refused Ryanair’s request to replace 2 restrooms with 6 additional seats on new aircraft due to considerations for passenger safety.  It would seem that Ryanair determined there is more money to be made from 6 additional seats plus all their related fees than from a £1 fee per restroom use.

Ryanair maintains even with all the increased fees purchasing their cheap European flight is still the best deal for travel in Europe – but isn’t it much better when you know the true cost of airfare before you purchase your ticket?

That seems to be a hot question in travel publications – will vacationers want to risk being stranded for days if another deluge of ash descends on European airports – or will they choose a different destination for their summer vacations.

A recent article in USA Today suggests airlines may lower prices for airline tickets to Europe in the peak summer season if demand falters. Any changes will occur within the next month.  The article also suggests that fares to the most popular destinations – London, Paris and Rome – during the European shoulder season (now through the end of May) have dropped considerably since the beginning of this year.

We haven’t found a substantial drop in shoulder season pricing for travel to Europe; instead, the lowest priced classes are sold out on many dates.  As some estimates suggest it will take several weeks to accommodate all  the travelers who have been stranded for the past week, it also seems likely it will be difficult to find cheap fares on already full planes before the start of the high season.

Unfortunately, no one can predict what the airlines will do.  Most airline analysts, prior to the volcanic ash disruption, maintained that low cost flights to Europe in the high summer season will be extremely difficult to find.  Waiting a month for sale fares that may not materialize could result in finding all the cheap fares already sold and having to pay much more for your airline tickets to Europe.

Operating with a Boeing 767-200ER aircraft, the Continental flight will depart Newark at 5:30 pm, arriving in Munich at 7:40 am the next day.  The return Continental flight departs Munich at 9:20 am and returns to Newark shortly after noon the same day.
