Airfares to Europe

One of the best sources for low cost airfares to Europe is Iberia.  As  member of the One World Alliance, the Spanish airline flies from many cities in the US to Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Venice and more.  Consistently, Iberia has offered cheap flights to Europe with its web-based airfares.

Flying on Iberia may no longer be the cheapest option for airfares to Europe

This changed somewhat on March 1st, when Iberia adopted a new luggage allowance policy for international travelers.  Passengers  taking advantage of  the cheap flights to Europe  will be allowed only one piece of checked luggage weighing no more than 50 pounds.

If you purchased your airplane tickets on Iberia before March 1, you are still allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage.  And if you paid full coach fare for your airfares to Europe, you can check up to two bags per person.  Business Plus class passengers can check three bags under this new policy.

In coach class, you can take up to one piece of hand luggage, weighing no more than about 20 pounds, on-board the airplane.

If you’re planning a long-haul trip across the pond and will have 2 pieces of luggage to check, Iberia may no longer have the best airfares to Europe.  If you pay for your additional checked luggage online, the cost for your second bag is 50 euros (almost $70 USD) and if you wait until you’re at the airport, the cost jumps to 60 euros  (over $80 USD).

While Iberia maintains that there newly imposed checked luggage fees are designed to reduce its airplanes’ fuel consumption and emissions, adding $70-80 onto the cost of each ticket when searching for the lowest airfares to Europe may price Iberia out of the market for the cheapest flights.
