Beware excessive fees on European airfare
Ryanair, the European airfare giant, announced earlier this month that it will enforce a new policy designed to limit carry-on luggage. The new restriction of only one “free” bag weighing no more than 10 kg (22 lbs) and less than 55cm X 40cm X 20cm (approximately 22in X 16in X 8in) applies to all passengers.
Additional carry-on bags will be assessed a charge of £30 (approximately USD $45) each. To avoid this fee, everything – laptop, handbag, duty free purchases – you carry on board must be in one bag.
Ryanair’s checked baggage fees range from £9.50 – 19 (approximately USD $15-30) for the first bag, depending on whether you purchased your ticket online or booked it through Ryanair’s call center. And remember, if you decide to check in at the airport, and not online, there is an additional fee of £4.75 – 9.
Airlines’ additional fees can be difficult to calculate at the time you are purchasing your European airfare – the fees are not shown with the ticket purchase price or mentioned by the telephone reservationist. What may seem like a low cost airfare can quickly become very expensive, especially if you travel with luggage.
