Ryanair considers new fees on cheap European flights

Ryanair’s President, Michael O’Leary, stated recently that he is considering implementing a £1 (approximately US $1.50 ) fee to use a lavatory on board their planes.  His rationale is that the airline needs to increase “discretionary revenue” to maintain its cheap European flights.

The lavatory doors would be fitted with a coin slot, similar to those used at newspaper stands. Ryanair is known for low cost European airfare with high additional fees for luggage, credit card use, airport check-in and beverages on board the planes.

A la carte charges on airlines have reached a new level of absurdity with O’Leary’s proposal.  We question whether it wouldn’t be easier for travelers – and more cost efficient for Ryanair – to charge an additional $5-10 for their cheap European flights  and provide passengers with basic levels of service and comfort.

Meanwhile, if the coin slots are installed on the lavatory doors, we will cheer anyone who happens to leave the door ajar for the next passenger.  And if you’re not lucky enough to find the door ajar, remember to have a £1 coin in your pocket or you will have a very uncomfortable flight.
