Delta is changing the requirements for gaining elite status in its SkyMiles program. Passengers will now have to spend a minimum amount on tickets per year to be eligible for each elite-status category. The spending requirements are $2,500 for Silver status; $5,000 for Gold status; $7,500 for Platinum and $12,500 for Diamond status. The new requirements will be effective from January 1, 2014, for elite membership status in the 2015 program.
The move is expected to get positive reception from frequent business travelers flying at company expense and make eligibility difficult for travelers gaining entry to Delta’s elite program solely through cheap flights.
