Air travelers may want to take into account several factors when it comes to choosing an airline for their flights. Also, both short-haul and long-haul flights have their own peculiarities and call for different priorities while zeroing-in on an airline.
For example, the cost of the flight typically takes precedence over seat comfort and meals during short flights (is there any other reason why RyanAir is so succesful?) On the other hand, comfort, earned frequent-flier miles and flight duration/connections become more relevant factors for long distance flights.
