A number of US airlines have launched package deals for flight add-ons such as checked baggage and priority boarding.
In June, United launched year-long checked baggage subscriptions and Economy Plus extra legroom seating subscriptions.
In September, Delta also launched its subscription plan, Smart Travel Pack, which gives fliers features such as priority boarding and preferred seats.
Travelers need to carefully consider their flying schedules and the planned amount of flying in the subscription period before subscribing to a package add-on program.
As The New York Times advises, subscriptions only make sense for travelers who fly frequently but not as much as to achieve elite status as elite status offers all the benefits of the packages at no additional cost.
It is also better to always compare fares with other airlines to check if you are getting value for your money. Be sure to check the fine print to ensure that you qualify for the benefits – airlines are notorious for making changes to their policies – and also seriously consider airline credit cards that often offer comparable benefits.
