Many US airports are hoping to earn extra revenue by having passengers spend more time and money inside the terminals while waiting for their flights.
To accomplish this, airports are forging ahead with extensive redesigns of terminals and the introduction of premium paid facilities such as premium bars, spas, gardens and high-end dining and shopping facilities.
However, US airports lag much behind their European and Asian counterparts when it comes to transforming airports into architectural marvels and tourist attractions.
- Recent notable US airport redesigns include:
San Francisco International’s redesign of Terminal 2,
- The ongoing redesign of Chicago O’Hare and
- Denver International Airport’s redevelopment, which is scheduled to finish in 2015.
