US Airways and American Airlines submitted documents related to their merger in a bankruptcy court in New York on April 15, 2013. AMR Corp, the owner of American Airlines, will also file a reorganization plan for the airline within 60 days as part of the bankruptcy proceedings of the airline.
The bankruptcy court has already cleared the merger of the 2 airlines, which is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2013. The deal still requires approval from the US Justice department as well as US Airways shareholders.
The Justice Department may require that the two airlines give up some of their combined take-off/landing slots at Washington’s Reagan National Airport as a condition for its approval of the merger.
