British Airways has begun testing personalized digital bag tags at Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport in October 2013.
The digital bag tags, developed by BA in partnership with Designworks, store a customer’s baggage details and can be used repeatedly up to 5 years. Paper luggage tags usually must be replaced for every flight.
Customers in the tests use their Nokia Lumia Windows Phones with a special version of British Airways mobile app to check in, choose their seat and obtain their mobile boarding pass.
The app automatically updates the digital bag tag with a unique barcode containing new flight details and an easy-to-see view of the traveler’s bag’s destination when the phone is held over the bag tag.
Passengers can then save time by quickly dropping their bags at dedicated bag drop area, before going straight through security without the need for a new paper tag to be printed and affixed.
The final version of the bag tags will support all smartphones.
