British Airways plans to test reusable electronic bag tags that can be updated before each flight through smartphones beginning in August.
The electronic bag tags will allow the airline’s passengers to update the tag’s barcode by holding their smartphone over the tag after checking-in. The system will save time by completely doing away with the printing and attachment of traditional paper tags.
The tags can also be scanned more quickly at the bag drop compared to paper tags.
British Airways Managing Director Frank van der Post said that the new system will give “each customer the choice to have their own personalized electronic baggage tag that changes with the swipe of a smartphone, every time they fly.”
Will eliminating the paper tag that includes your destination airport with an electronic tag no one can see give you confidence that your bag will arrive at its destination?
