With the launch of ultra-low cost “seat-only” (checked luggage is not included) tickets by airlines flying domestic flights within New Zealand, Air New Zealand and its competing airlines have started to strictly enforce carry-on baggage restrictions.
Recently Air New Zealand began warning passengers they will enforce the 7-kg (approximately 15.4 lbs) carry-on weight limit on seat-only tickets. From experience, this means there could be multiple checkpoints for weighing carry-on baggage before boarding the plane.
Air New Zealand launched $7 seat-only airfares between New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland and the capital city of Wellington in late 2012. Its rival on this route, Jetstar, Australian airline Qantas’ low-cost carrier, offers $19 seat-only airfares between these two cities.
