The mysterious land Downunder, Australia – the top vacation dream destination for many Americans – is within reach through increased airline carriers and many alternatives for cheap flights to Australia from the United States and Canada.
Choices for Cheap Flights to Australia
For vacationers in the continental United States, non-stop flights to Australia begin in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with most flights departing from LAX. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Delta and United fly non-stop from Los Angeles to Australia.
In May 2011, Qantas began operating flights to Sydney with a stop first in Brisbane from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. At the same time, Qantas discontinued its flights from San Francisco to Australia, leaving United as the only airline with non-stop flights to Australia from SFO.
All the airlines with direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas to Australia offer connecting flights from many cities in the US.
Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne are the international arrival airports for non-stop flights from the US mainland. Non-stop flights from Honolulu arrive and depart only in Sydney.
The flight time from Los Angeles to Brisbane is approximately 14 hours; flying to Sydney takes approximately 14½ to 15 hours; and flights to Melbourne last approximately 15½ hours. Departing from San Francisco adds less than one-half hour onto the Los Angeles flight time.
Pricing Depends on the Season
Flights to Australia are priced according to seasons and the exact dates of these seasons change every year. For the most part, the frequently advertised low-season deals are available from May through early June and from mid-July through mid-September.
Airfare costs for traveling from mid-February through the end of April increase significantly – about $300 per ticket – but this is a great time to travel. In Australia’s late summer-early fall there are fewer tourists and the weather is mostly pleasant everywhere.
From early June through mid-July, pricing is even higher. Although these are winter months in Australia, many vacationers, especially school groups, travel to Australia during their summer vacations. November is also a more expensive time to fly to Australia.
From mid-September through the end of October, pricing for flights to Australia is much more expensive. This is the time many group escorted tours travel to the country and their demand for flights increases the price. Airfares in Australia’s summer high-season, mid-January through the middle of February, are also much higher.
During the year-end holiday season, from early December through mid-January, airplane tickets to Australia are at the highest prices. There are few if any sales or promotions during this season and the cheapest flights are available only if you purchase your tickets early.
For the lowest pricing on flights to Australia, be flexible with your travel dates and try plan your departure from the US in a low fare season. Searching just a few days before and after your preferred departure date can have a major difference in the cost of your airfare.

You can combine your flights to Australia with New Zealand or Fiji. By flying from the United States to Australia on United, you can include a non-stop flight to Queenstown, Christchurch or Auckland, New Zealand and return home on Air New Zealand’s non-stop flights from Auckland to either Los Angeles or San Francisco.
While this routing offers the best connections for traveling to both countries, until April 2014 when United is scheduled to introduce upgraded planes on its flights to Australia, flights on United will not be the most comfortable for people in economy class.
Award-winning Air New Zealand offers good pricing on its flights to Australia, but all Air New Zealand planes departing from the US stop in Auckland before connecting to a flight to Australia. Unless you’re planning to include exploring New Zealand in your trip to Australia, flying to Australia on Air New Zealand may save money but will add many extra hours to your travel time.
Fiji Airways (formerly Air Pacific) flies from Los Angeles to Nadi, Fiji and from there to Sydney on most days of each week. If you’d like to spend a few days or more relaxing in a tropical paradise – and don’t mind a lay-over in Nadi – flying on Fiji Airways is a great alternative, especially as they’ve recently upgraded their fleet.
