Dubai International Airport, the second busiest airport in the world based on international passenger traffic after London Heathrow, registered double digit growth in the month of May.
The airport recorded total passenger traffic of over 5.2 million in May. This is 18.9 percent higher than the same month in 2012 when it recorded passenger traffic of about 4.3 million.
May was also the sixth consecutive month the airport recorded a monthly passenger traffic of over 5 million.
The largest growth in passenger numbers was on flights to/from Western Europe. This can be attributed to the significant growth of flights by Dubai Airport based Emirates to the region.
Australia was the fastest growing destination in May with traffic growth of about 50 percent. Australian airline Qantas started flights to Dubai in May after its comprehensive partnership with Emirates came into effect in April.
