Air travelers can get all the benefits, upgrades and perks such as early boarding, priority security lines and extra legroom seats applicable to elite frequent fliers, by spending about $4,000-$7,000 on buying airline status outright.
For example, US Airways sells “Chairman Preferred” status in its Dividend Miles program for $3,999 without any flying. Similarly, United offers a shortcut to Premier 1K status for $5,000-$6,000 (+ some miles). Some travelers even go on long cheap flights, dubbed “status runs” just to accumulate miles required to qualify for elite status.
