Abu Dhabi (UAE) based carrier Etihad may acquire a stake in Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, according to a June 2013 article in eTurboNews.com.
Etihad currently has minority stakes in German airline airberlin and Air Seychelles. It also recently acquired a minority stake in Jet Airways, India’s largest full-service carrier.
Etihad and Garuda commenced new code-share flights between Jakarta and Perth from June 28. The daily non-stop flights will be operated by Garuda. Etihad currently operates flights between Abu Dhabi and Jakarta.
Etihad is one of the 3 major Gulf region carriers, the other 2 being Dubai-based Emirates and Doha-based Qatar Airways. The 3 Gulf carriers have emerged as major forces in the world aviation industry over the last few years.
