Planning to fly to New Zealand? If you’re concerned about the length of the flight and being able to sleep in what could be a fully-booked aircraft, and premium economy or business class seats are beyond your budget, consider Air New Zealand’s Skycouch seating. This innovative seating concept offered on its Boeing 777-300 aircraft offers extra space – and lie-flat sleep – in economy class.
Skycouch is designed for 2 passengers travelling together. A row of 3 seats is converted into a comfortable couch by adjusting the armrests and foot-supports. Extra pillows, blankets, seat belt extenders designed for comfort and safely while laying, and full instructions on maximizing your use of space are provided. The total length of the “bed” is about 5 feet 1 inch – two passengers can sleep diagonally to gain maximum length from the space.
The first rows in economy class, along each side of the aircraft, are reserved for Skycoach seating. Although reserving a Skycoach will not get you any of the premium class benefits like upgraded meals, priority boarding or lounge access, you will be among the first to disembark when the plane lands.
The main benefit of Skycouch is the additional space and opportunity for restful sleep at a reasonable cost – especially compared to the cost of Air New Zealand’s business class lie-flat seats – for the long-haul flight between the U.S. and Auckland.
Skycouch is available for about $800 to $1,000 more than the ticket price for two seats. Upgrading to Skycouch will be less than the cost of buying a third seat.
The main disadvantages of Skycouch occur if the passengers in the row in front of you recline their seats fully. This obviously decreases your amount of space and would be painfully uncomfortable in any of the economy class seats. And two tall passengers may feel a bit cramped when trying to recline in just over 5′ of space – but the ability to enjoy a comfortable sleep on the flight and arrive in Auckland feeling refreshed more than makes up for the initial maneuvering to find the most comfortable position. Just be sure to not hang over the seat edge into the aisle.
