Germany’s Frankfurt Airport has conducted a validation exercise for a ground-based guidance solution using lights on taxiways as part of the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) program, according to EturboNews.
The test involving automatic guidance through Airfield Ground Lighting was performed at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) from June 24 to 28 in Fraport AG’s building 453 in CargoCity North.
The guidance system guides aircraft flight crews along their paths by following moving segments of activated green lights on the taxiways.
The goal of the exercise was to demonstrate the advantages of the new SESAR-method of guidance from the pilot’s point of view when compared to existing operating methods. The test also involved flight guidance under low-visibility conditions.
