London’s Heathrow Airport announced a number of planned measures to reduce the noise levels at the airport in a May 2013 report, titled A Quieter Heathrow.
These measures include:
- Ranking airlines according to their noise levels,
- Steeply increasing fines on airlines with poor noise performance,
- testing steeper approaches to the airport to reduce the areas affected by aircraft noise.
Other measures in the report include a new noise insulation program in local communities.
Heathrow will also encourage quieter planes by assessing higher airport charges on noisy planes and lower charges on quieter planes.
The public ranking of airlines by noise levels or the ‘Fly Quiet’ program will be launched later in 2013.
