India is planning to relax transit visa rules in a few months. The rules for the new visa will enable stopovers of 48 to 72 hours, which can be used by the visa holders to make quick visits to tourist destinations such as the Taj Mahal without going through the process of applying for a tourist visa to India (required by all United States passport holders).
The new rules, if finalized, will be initially implemented in Delhi and Mumbai. They are aimed at boosting the tourism industry which, despite the country’s numerous attractions, has only recorded moderate growth in recent years.
