Many airlines are now realizing the hitherto wasted opportunity presented by an in-flight moving map, according to Apex Aero Blog. The moving maps – one of the most popular items on the in-flight entertainment systems – have generally included just a map and a countdown timer.
US-based Airborne Interactive partnered with the UK’s Royal Geographical Society in 2011 to develop point of interest (POI) guides for in-flight moving maps.
These interactive guides – consisting of photographs, carefully selected factual information and/or video content – have been developed for a number of air routes including London Heathrow to Johannesburg, Bangkok to Sydney and Madrid to Rio de Janeiro.
The maps can even be monetized by displaying content from parties such as the tourism boards of countries on the flight path.
The interactive moving maps are expected to be available on at least two airlines by the end of this year.
