JetBlue has become the first airline in North America to take delivery of new Airbus A320s with blended winglets. The winglets, dubbed sharklets due to the resemblance to shark fins, improve the aerodynamics of the aircraft. This reduces fuel burn by 3-4 percent – saving a fortune for penny-pinching airlines. An added plus is that the aircraft looks different and sleeker.
Malaysia based AirAsia was the first airline in the world to receive blended winglets equipped A320s in late 2012. JetBlue plans to retrofit its entire A320 fleet with the sharklets over the next few years. All its new A320s and A321s will also feature the sharklets.
