JetBlue has plans for a significant expansion of its operations from the Long Beach Airport in Los Angeles County, CA, according to an article in the Long Beach Press Telegramin September 2013. This may lead to the developing of the airport as a major JetBlue gateway on the West Coast.
The expansion may include multiple international flights including those to new destinations in Central and South America.
However, at present, the Long Beach airport lacks an international arrivals facility staffed by US Customs and Border Protection officers and also restricts maximum daily flights by heavy aircraft to 41.
Currently, JetBlue operates 22-30 flights daily from Long Beach with an average of 25 departures. It intends to introduce Embraer-190 aircraft to use the 25 unused daily slots for the lighter aircraft at the airport, subject to approval by city authorities.
