London’s Gatwick airport, the city’s second largest airport after Heathrow, officially opened its first stand for Airbus A380 aircraft. An Emirates A380 became the first aircraft to operate from the facility, stand 110 on pier 6, on March 26, 2013.
The stand was developed at a cost of 6.4 million pounds (about $10 million). A380 services will allow the airport to offer long-haul services with more seats per plane and greater passenger numbers.
Gatwick Airport handled nearly 34 million passengers in 2012 and is expected to handle nearly 38 million passengers by 2020.
