German airline Lufthansa is planning to introduce an advance seat reservation (ASR) fee on short- and medium-haul routes for travelers wishing to reserve a preferred seat in advance of flight check-in.
The fee is expected to be between 5-15 euros ($7-$20).
The seat reservation fee is initially expected to be introduced on flights within Europe and regional flights from Europe to Africa and the Mid-East.
Currently (in September 2013), seats on Lufthansa’s short and medium haul flights are assigned at check in.
The new fee will not be applicable to HON Circle members, Senator cardholders and economy passengers booking tickets in higher fare classes.
Lufthansa may also follow the trend set by Qantas and introduce a similar fee on long-haul flight in the future. The anticipated charge for a pre-assigned seat on long-haul flights is expected to be around 40 euros (about $54).
