Melbourne Airport has become the latest airport in Australia with operational full-body scanners.
Eight major Australian airports are scheduled to get the millimeter-wave full-body scanners by the end of December. Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne have operational scanners at present while Sydney, Adelaide, Darwin, Cairns and the Gold Coast will get the scanners in the next two weeks.
The scanners display a stick figure outline of the passenger as opposed to the body outline shown by full-body scanners used at US airports. Passengers are selected for screening at random and cannot opt out unless they have a valid medical reason.
