The long-awaited new Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) started operations on September 18, 2013 after completion of the first phase of renovation.
The $1.9 billion South Concourse of the terminal was officially opened by Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and other city and airport officials.
Phase 1 of the terminal renovation includes 8 new aircraft boarding gates capable of handling large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. About 30 airlines will operate from the new terminal.
Phase 2 of the project will include new boarding bridges and aircraft aprons, upgraded federal customs and immigration inspection areas. It is scheduled to be completed in early 2015. The completed terminal will have 18 boarding gates in total.
