The debate over the use of portable electronic devices during the entire time users are on an airplane is becoming more intense each day as smartphones, tablets and e-readers become even more prevalent on flights.
Proponents of in-flight electronic device-use question the scientific basis behind the presumed safety hazards of using their devices. This group also points out the use of similar devices by the crew and pilots as well as by many passengers who do not switch off their devices.
On the other hand, aviation engineers and safety experts support the ban on the devices during landing and take-off on safety grounds.
Not to be left out, some US Senators as well as some electronics makers have also come out against the ban on electronic devices.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), faced with the unenviable task of reconciling the opinions of the two groups, has so far taken the easy route of maintaining the status quo.
