US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners found over 1,500 guns at airport security checkpoints across the country in 2012.
TSA said that the maximum number of guns (80) was found at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This was followed by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (75), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (50), George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (48) and Denver International Airport (36).
In most of the cases, travelers carrying the guns either did not know that they were not allowed to carry guns on-board or were not aware about the guns in their luggage. TSA rules allow unloaded and declared guns inside locked, hard-sided containers only in checked baggage. TSA found 1,320 firearms at airport screening points in 2011.
