Traditionally, the major US-European airlines dominated air travel and all are members of one the three major airline alliances – Star, oneworld and SkyTeam.
But now three major airlines from the Gulf region – Qatar, Emirates and Etihad – with their new fleets and disregard for the traditional business models are shaking up the airline world. These airlines’ hubs are located in strategic advantageous locations that give them an advantage in connecting the Western markets with the rapidly growing Asian air travel market.
The extensive financial resources of the three airlines and their concurrent stakes in multiple code-share agreements are seriously disrupting the airline alliance-model and may eventually cause the demise of these alliances.
