The US Transport Safety Administration (TSA) has been rapidly expanding its Precheck expedited screening program and plans to cover nearly one fourth of all domestic passengers by year-end 2013.
However, adoption of trusted traveler programs, such as TSA’s PreCheck and Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry, is facing obstacles in the European Union due to passenger privacy concerns by EU politicians.
The Dutch Civil Aviation Security Department is evaluating the use of special scanner algorithms that assess threats based on specific traveler groups. A group based approach, instead of an individual based approach, avoids some privacy concerns despite its limited scope and application.
