Qatar Airways’ CEO Akbar Al Baker has announced that the airline will join the oneworld airline alliance in October 2013. Qatar Airways will be the first among the 3 major gulf carriers – other 2 being Emirates and Etihad – to become a full-fledged member of an airline alliance.
American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Iberia, Royal Jordanian and LAN are the other major members of the oneworld alliance.
Qatar Airways’ membership in oneworld will see it closely coordinating flights and schedules with these airlines. It will most probably also lead to code-sharing arrangements with many of the other alliance airlines.
