Samoa Air, the first airline to charge passengers according to their weight, has introduced special seating for accommodating larger passengers.
The airline installed an “Executive Row” by removing armrests. It also provides a ramp for easier access into the aircraft.
Samoa Air launched its weight-based fare structure in November 2012. Its fares are calculated on the basis of total passenger and luggage weight according to a fixed rate of 93 cents to $1.06 per kg, depending on the flight distance.
The airline operates small turboprop aircraft on flights between the islands in Samoa.
Samoa has one of the highest obesity rates (91%+) in the world.
