Construction work on the first international terminal of Southwest Airlines, the largest domestic airline in the US as well as the world, started at Houston Hobby Airport in Texas in October 2013.
Southwest will operate flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America from the airport when the new terminal opens in late-2015.
The $156 million project includes a new terminal building to host Southwest’s international operations and up to 5 gates with immigration facilities.
The existing ticketing and security areas of the airport will also be upgraded to deal with increased passenger traffic.
The entire cost of the 280,000 square foot new terminal is being borne by Southwest in exchange for rent-free use of the gates over a 25-year lease.
