SWISS has become the latest European airline to announce special lower fares for passengers who do not have checked baggage.
The new fare category for passengers only with hand luggage has been named Geneva Economy Light. It will be launched on September 1, 2013 on all international routes to and from Geneva except to Barcelona, St Petersburg, Zurich and Moscow. No re-booking or cancellation will be allowed on these fares.
The other (regular) economy option will be Geneva Economy Flex with one piece of checked baggage and re-booking and cancellation options.
British Airways launched similar “hand baggage only” fares in March on some short-haul European flights from London Gatwick.
In April, KLM became the first European full-service carrier to charge additional checked bag fees on flights within Europe.
