The US Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) confiscates about 750,000 prohibited items every year at its airport checkpoints. This includes knives, large tools, sporting equipment and an average of four guns everyday. The items are sent to the nearest state willing to accept them.
Pennsylvania, which has an online auction website for surplus items, has netted nearly $900,000 in the last nine years from the sale of the TSA confiscated items. Deals are also available on bulk lots of frequently-confiscated items such as pocket tools, assorted belts (men and ladies), letter openers and scissors.
The items are available at an offline state-owned Surplus Distribution Center in Harrisburg as well.
