United Airlines is trying to increase domestic airfares by $10 per round trip on most flights. This is the eighth fare hike attempt by a US airline this year and the third such attempt by United.
Only two of the eight fare hike attempts have been successful in 2013 and both of these were initiated by Delta, according to FareCompare.com.
For a fare hike to be successful, other major carriers, such as Southwest – the largest US domestic carrier – have to support it. However, Southwest has not yet supported this latest fare hike.
US airlines attempted to hike fares 15 times in 2012 with seven of the attempts being successful.
