US airlines United and Delta maintained their positions as the largest and second largest airlines in the world in 2012. UAE based Emirates, which is in third place, is expected to overtake Delta in 2013 to become the world’s second largest airline. According to research by the CAPA Centre for Aviation, Emirates will overtake Delta this year if it maintains its previous year’s growth rate of 18.4 percent.
Southwest retained its position as the world’s largest low-cost airline and was followed by Ryanair and JetBlue.
United became the world’s largest airline in 2010 after its merger with Continental. The airlines were ranked on the basis of seat kilometer measurement and capacity.
