United Airlines announced an order for a total of 35 A350-1000 aircraft. The airline plans to use these aircraft on long-haul routes including on flights between the US and Australia according to a June 2013 article in Australian Business Traveller.
United currently operates Boeing 747-400 aircraft for its flights linking Los Angeles and San Francisco with Sydney and Melbourne.
The airline converted an existing order for 25 A350-900 aircraft to the larger capacity A350-1000 aircraft and also ordered an additional 10 aircraft. The delivery of the aircraft to United is expected to begin in 2018.
The Airbus A350, which recently completed its maiden flight successfully, is an upcoming long-range wide-body airliner.
It is the primary competitor to Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner family of aircraft as well as Boeing’s 777X aircraft.
