United Airlines announced plans to use aviation bio-fuel on a commercial scale on some of its flights out of its hub at Los Angeles International Airport from 2014.
This will make the airline probably the first large-scale user of aviation bio-fuel in the world.
The airline has entered into an agreement with alternative fuels provider AltAir Fuels to buy 15 million gallons of bio-derived jet fuel over a 3 year period.
Under the partnership with United, AltAir Fuels will convert part of an existing petroleum refinery near Los Angeles to set-up a biofuel refinery.
The facility will convert non-edible natural oils and agricultural wastes into approximately 30 million gallons of biofuels and chemicals per year.
AltAir expects to deliver 5 million gallons of renewable jet fuel annually to United from 2014.
