Major US airlines have registered one of the best on-time flight performance rates in the last 19 years – since the US Department of Transportation (DOT) started tracking on-time performance – in the first half of 2013.
The top 16 airlines had a on-time flight performance record of 78.1% from January to June, according to DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. This was sixth-highest performance rate for the period in 19 years.
A flight was categorized as on-time if it arrived/departed within 15 minutes of its scheduled time.
Flight cancellation rates (1.68%) were also one of the lowest recorded.
However, the baggage mishandling rate was higher than the previous year – recorded as 3.23 reports per 1,000 passengers compared to 2.97 per 1,000 passengers in the first half of 2012.
The good on-time performance has been attributed to generally good weather and fewer flights during the period.
