US Airways will join the oneworld airline alliance in early 2014, according to media reports quoting the airline’s president, J. Scott Kirby.
The move is a result of the impending merger between American Airlines and US Airways which will lead to an enlarged American Airlines, with headquarters based in Fort Worth, Texas. American Airlines is one of the founding members of oneworld. US Airways will leave the Star Alliance after the merger.
Qatar Airways is another major airline scheduled to join oneworld in the near future with the airline expected to join in October of this year.
Major oneworld members include American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, JAL, airberlin, Iberia, LAN Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.
