The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) introduced Automated Passport Control kiosks for US and Canadian passengers at Canada’s Montréal-Trudeau airport in 2013.
The new system consists of 12 kiosks where Canadian or American passengers traveling to the United States can enter their passport and identification information prior to inspection by a CBP officer.
The kiosks are expected to reduce transit time for passengers heading to the US through the airport to under 20 minutes.
The new automated kiosks are similar to the ones introduced last year by Canadian customs for arriving passengers.
Passport holders from other countries will still, however, have to follow the usual procedure involving manual completion of the US Customs and Border Protection declaration form.
