Adequate seat space is fast becoming a rare and premium commodity in air travel as airlines are squeezing more and more passengers into an aircraft. Seat space data at air-travel website Routehappy shows that only four percent of economy seats on the US airlines qualify as “roomy” (seat pitch over 32 inches) and only two airlines – Virgin America and jetBlue – offer such economy seats to every customer. All others offer spacious seats as paid upgrades.
Routehappy’s data also shows that 86 percent of economy seats on US airlines are “standard sized” (seat pitch 31-32 inches) while the remaining 10 percent fall in the “tight” category (28-30 inch pitch).
