The recent sale of the airline bmi by Lufthansa to British Airways has left Virgin Atlantic high and dry as nearly 25 percent of its international passengers at Heathrow came from bmi’s Scottish and European flights to Heathrow. The airline, which has prided itself for its independence, is now seriously considering joining an alliance. As oneworld is dominated by its rival British Airways and Star Alliance does not complement its services, SkyTeam may by the most sensible choice for the airline.
This week’s rumors of the 49 percent stake sale by Singapore Airlines and the planned purchase of the stake by Delta – a Skyteam member – also seem to indicate this direction.
