Virgin Atlantic become the first airline to implement a detailed noise management strategy complete with time targets in December 2013.
The airline has set a target of a 75 percent reduction in noise energy per flight by 2020.
Virgin Atlantic has also called for setting up an independent ombudsman to report on aviation noise output.
A key element of Virgin’s Noise Management Strategy is the further reduction of aircraft noise by an average of about 6dB per flight – Virgin has already reduced noise from its aircraft by an average of 5dB – through the introduction of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a 60 percent smaller noise footprint than aircraft of a comparable size.
The airline will also work with aviation industry to explore new operating techniques and procedures for noise reduction.
Virgin Atlantic plans to engage local communities around key airports and review its noise reduction strategy every five years to meet emerging challenges.
